Coupling: Long Live Jeff Murdock!

coupling_amain_banner

Season 4 of Coupling returns -- the original, funny British version, not the pimped up, watered down, abridged U.S. imitation.

There's some good news and some bad news: The good news is the writing is still funny, delightfully absurd. Innovative story telling structures are still in place. Episode one of the 4th season tells the same story 3 times -- Go style -- from each couple's perspective. The producers have retained their fearlessness, and are as provocative, even over the top, as ever.

The bad news? I could tell you the pacing is a little off, or that the characters seem to have leapt far ahead of you in their relationships. But really, the big problem so far is that it looks as if Richard Coyle (Jeff Murdock) has left the show . . .

As the BBC site reveals (see graphic above), Coyle's Jeff Murdock character is not in the show's Who's who on Coupling bios, and he's missing from the Episode guide

Sigh. In such a tight ensemble, its tough to imagine the show not suffering from the loss of a beloved character. Imagine Seinfeld if it lost Kramer. . . .

For some fun with the Jeff Murdock character, see this collection of Quotes and Clips (parts 2 and 3 are here). He will be tough to replace.

BRING JEFF BACK!! Tell those BBC Bastards we wont watch a single episode until my FAVORITE Character comes back!!! Personally this show isn't worth watchign without Jeffs funny remarks and out takes. This is nonsense! I demand justice!!!

Can't believe they'd carry on without jeff! It's like taking Joey out of 'Friends'. Only character u could replace is Sally, otherwise forget it!

We need Jeff. He brings a whole new level of funny that sets coupling apart from every other sitcom. The void Jeff left can only be properly refilled by Jeff himself.

The first episode of the 4th season was ok... It didn't make me laugh that much. It was funny but not as innovative... As you said it was in the "Go" style which played on the 1950s Japanese film "Rashômon". I just hope it get's better *about to watch episode 2 of season 4 on DVD*. Hoo-hum, it just has to get better. My fiance thinks Oliver is a lame hybrid of a wannabe Jeff, and a wannabe Seth Cohen from "The OC". :p

An ensemble show like coupling depends so much on the chemistry between the players -- major changes are usually fatal.

I can think of two shows that survived --even thrived -- after a major cast change.

Its so rare a major cast change works -- the only 2 shows I can think of where it did were MASH --
Wayne Rogers as Capt. John Francis Xavier 'Trapper John' McIntyre (1972-1975) was replaced by Mike Farrell playing Capt. B.J. Hunnicut (1975-1983) -- and Cheers, with Shelley Long as Diane Chambers (1982-1987) swapped out for Kirstie Alley as Rebecca Howe (1987-1993). I think that worked but that was only cause most people couldn't stand the character of Diane.

While there must be others, nothing else pops into my head.

Jeff is NOT replaceable; the show's writing even seemed to suffer. I was sure something besides that character had to have changed...
Someone - please get Richard back; what is he doing that is as beloved as his Couplings character?

Couplings is one of the ONLY comedies that is truly funny! American network TV is basically not worth watching!! I live in America and just watched season four of Couplings from Netflix. I have told all of my friends to watch it (or loaned them my copies to watch). Now that Jeff is gone, I don't think I'll recommend watching it beyond season three. This is not to say that the other characters are not great, but the show is not the same without Jeff ... he was my favorite character! I think my two favorite scenes were when he removed his clothes in his office at his birthday party and when he did the Spiderman dance!

PS- I have never posted a note on the internet about anything other than politics in my entire life ... just to give you an indication of how much I liked Jeff! :) PLEASE BRING HIM BACK!!

Just watched season 4. I liked most of it, but feel that I missed something between the end of season 3 and the beginning of this season. I don't remember seeing a wedding, I guess I will go back and see season 3 again. Jeff and Steve are the best parts of the show. Jeff made me laugh until I cried!!! It actually hurt I laughed so hard, but that never happened in this season:(

I must agree on every post made above. I maybe a little late but I've gotta say it.
I never saw series 4 when it first came on, my love for coupling was re-kindled when I saw an old episode on UK gold in late October. Since then I've now every series on DVD. I watched series 1-3 in the space of 3 weeks and it was as fresh as ever even though I had seen most episodes 2-3 times already. And like everyone above here, I loved Jeff and his antics. His quest for a woman reminded me of frasier, when niles and daphnie almost "got it on" on so many occasions - IT WAS PAINFUL! When Jeff and Julia got together there was parties in my house afterwards!
And last night (4th of Dec 2005), I put on series 4. I had never seen any of them before, EVER. Coupling always clashed when I was at the gym so I never got to see it. Frankly I wished I never bothered. I've only seen episode one and that's all I need to see. I went to bed early instead of carrying on to watch. I felt genuine hate towards Oliver. No offence to Richard Mylan, but I wouldn't have shed a tear if he stayed down on the floor when Sally knocked him out!!!
Richard Coyle, wheverever you are, please please reconsider and be back for series 5 (there will be a series 5). And bring back Julia too! When it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Goddamnit where is Jeff! Give him chicks, money, a bib to catch his spit as he delivers his outrageously funny dialogue. We don't care-JUST BRING HIM BACK!

"I watched series 1-3 in the space of 3 weeks"

That is strange I just watcht all the four seasons in the past two and a half day. I must say, I really miss the character of Jeff. Although in the end Oliver turns out to be nice, in the first episodes he was trying to hard to replace Jeff.
If they decide to make a fifth season, it would be nice to have Jeff popping up again. It doesn't mean that they have to kick Oliver out, he is a valuebale adittion, being the only one that can tame Jane.

In Sweden, Coupling came on every Saturday at seven. And every week I longed for a hillarious joke from jeff. I didn't notice that he was gone in episonde one because I thought I just missed his scene.

When he didn't return on the second episode I was worried and frankly PO, why was there a very similary character, Oliver instead of jeff.

GOOD GOD people, why did anyone think that he could be replaced, and with Oliver. When I watch Oliver telling jokes or akting funny I blush of embarrassement.

NOTE: Wouldn't Dave Chapelle have been funny as an repalcement and WHY did jeff quit?

unlike you blokes, I am glad that Jeff is not in the show anymore.

His character didn't have the class, the other 5 had.

No Jeff, No show. The decay begins. Two major faults now at hand steer this sit-com towards absolute certain ruin. The first is the loss of it's most beloved character (Jeff). He was the spark that ignited this show in the first place. Jeff's character with the help of somewhat straight man Steve made each episode a delight. The second and final nail in the coffin for this series is the pregnancy and future baby of Susan and Steve. Once children appear, sit-coms die. It's happened on every show from Friend's to Fraiser and it NEVER WORKS. Sorry, the show is DOOMED.

Its been four ish years now since the show last screened by i still watch the dvd's (series 1-3 of course!) I think we need to get a petition to bring back the original cast and get another series. That would be great!!! Come on people, coupling was the best show on TV!!!
