Financial Blog Search Engine

Here's a pretty smart idea, via Microcaps Speculator:  Search over 100 of the top financial blogs at once, without any of the spam blogs (splogs) that clog results on typical blog search engines.

How to Get Your Comments Banned

My own policies are clearly stated here, but I like the description of how to get your comments banned over at boingboing:

Q. What's likely to land me in your bad graces?
A. Since you've asked, here's a nowhere-near-exhaustive list:

1. Spamming. Linkwhoring. Re-posting text you've already posted on a dozen other sites.

2. Making supercilious and unpleasant remarks in a civil liberties thread about how the victim had it coming. This is not to say that victims never have it coming; but there's a species of internet demi-troll that appears to specialize in posting such comments. Try not to look like you're one of them.

3. Making snide comments and insinuations about the editors. That's right out. You don't like one of the editors? Take it up with them in e-mail. If you're going to comment on an entry, talk about the entry.

4. Being nasty to no purpose. (This is the catch-all.)

5. Using unnecessarily exciting language. Making an argument is fine. Making your argument in language guaranteed to make your hearers see red? Bad idea. It practically guarantees that you're going to have a dumb (and therefore boring) argument. And if the argument's not going to be interesting, we don't see the point.

6. Jeering, sneering, condescending, or one-upping when there's been no provocation. Telling people they're naive idiots for caring about whatever-it-is. Like the "I'm bored" pose, it's empty attitudinizing, and it's remarkably unpleasant.

7. Failing to notice that there are other people in the conversation. Posting a remark that's already been made five times and answered six. Coming back and re-posting essentially the same material after a twenty-message thread has discussed your previous comment. Trying to forcibly wrench the conversation onto one of your own pet topics. Posting a stale, canned rant you've posted a dozen times before at other sites. Not coming back to see how others have responded to you.

Why post comments at all, unless you expect to be read? And if you expect to be read, you must know you're part of a conversation. Therefore, you should act like it. Engage with what the other commenters are saying. Read the thread before you add to it.

8. Posting a snotty but otherwise worthless anonymous comment. It's a lot easier to get away with snotty comments if you're a registered user.

9. Dragging in one of those topics that's guaranteed to generate a huge thrash that goes nowhere, like gun control, abortion, or Mac vs. PC vs. Linux. You're only allowed to discuss those if (a.) they're relevant to the entry; and (b.) everyone in the discussion is doing their level best to say something new.

10. This list will undoubtedly get longer.

Influence Ripples + Tipping Points

I was doing some prep work for my panel appearance on this week's MoneyTech conference, when I came across David Armano (Critical Mass) and his neat illustration below.

He created this after reading Clive Thompson's "Un-Tipping Point."

David's supposition? While the Tipping point may be an overstatement, there are many different levels of influencers -- A-listers, Mainstream Media, ordinary bloggers -- but each can influence the other, as well as the general public.

The best blogs about Google

Rex Sorgatz of Fimoculous, answers the question: Among the scores of sites devoted to Google-watching, sympathetic and skeptical, which are the best?

PRO-GOOGLE

Google Operating System
By  far the most comprehensive destination for all-things-Google, this site  consistently reads between the lines of the press releases, teases out hidden  features, and scoops tech reporters without even trying. The name derives from  the notion that the operating system as we know it is dying–and moving  online.

Blogoscoped
Taking a  slightly more newsy agenda, Blogscoped tracks new product releases, privacy  concerns, and releases from Google competitors.

The Official Google Blog
You  might think that Google could be the one company that uses blogging as more than  a PR platform. You’d be wrong.

The  Google Public Policy Blog
Also  penned by Google insiders, this controversial site abandons public relations in  favor of lawyerly reflection. Some call it propaganda; others, a transparent way  of being a PAC. Either way, it’s an eye into what Google’s lawyers in D.C. are  working on.

Google News Blog
As  Google tries to figure out where it stands as a content company, this blog from  the Google News team shows some of their thinking.

ANTI-GOOGLE

Just Say “No” To Google
This  might be the most popular blog of all time that has only one post. Originally an  email circulated by Microsoft employees, the site’s solo post posits the pluses  and minuses at working at Google versus Microsoft. Although it tilts slightly  toward Microsoft in its estimation, it’s still an evenly argued examination of  what each company offers its employees.

Google Watch
Google has  plenty of problems — privacy concerns, PageRank gamers, and its policy China  policy, for starters. Google Watch articulates several of these, but an  unsurprisingly backlash-to-the-backlash has sprung up:  Google-Watch-Watch.org.

Scobleizer
Since leaving  Microsoft last year, Robert Scoble’s blog has become considerably more  pro-Google and anti-Microsoft. But the archives contain a wealth of “why do I  get no respect?” rants.

Calacanis.com
When you hear  this former Weblogs, Inc. founder speak about Google, it’s all about how the  robots aren’t winning the battle against the spammers. Looking for a hotel in  Paris? Just type in “Paris Hilton” and see what happens. His solution is to put  humans back in control by launch Mahalo.com, where actual humans are crafting search  result pages, rather than algorithms.

The Blogosphere

Blosphere

The blogosphere is the most explosive social network you’ll never see. Recent studies suggest that nearly 60 million blogs exist online, and about 175,000 more crop up daily (that’s about 2 every second). Even though the vast majority of blogs are either abandoned or isolated, many bloggers like to link to other Web sites. These links allow analysts to track trends in blogs and identify the most popular topics of data exchange. Social media expert Matthew Hurst recently collected link data for six weeks and produced this plot of the most active and interconnected parts of the blogosphere.

Newsweek: Run by cowards

Who are the cowards editing the US Newsweek?

Newsweek51

Raw Story writes:

The United States edition of the October 2, 2006 issue of Newsweek features a radically different cover story from its International counterparts, RAW STORY has learned.

The cover of International editions, aimed at Europe, Asia, and Latin America, displays in large letters the title "LOSING AFGHANISTAN," along with an arresting photograph of an armed jihadi.

The cover of the United States edition, in contrast, is dedicated to celebrity photographer Annie Leibovitz and is demurely captioned "My Life in Pictures."

The International cover story begins:

"You don't have to drive very far from Kabul these days to find the Taliban. In Ghazni province's Andar district, just over a two-hour trip from the capital on the main southern highway, a thin young man, dressed in brown and wearing a white prayer cap, stands by the roadside waiting for two NEWSWEEK correspondents. It is midday on the central Afghan plains, far from the jihadist-infested mountains to the east and west. Without speaking, the sentinel guides his visitors along a sandy horse trail toward a mud-brick village within sight of the highway. As they get closer a young Taliban fighter carrying a walkie-talkie and an AK-47 rifle pops out from behind a tree. He is manning an improvised explosive device, he explains, in case Afghan or U.S. troops try to enter the village."

The United Story cover story begins:

"Annie Leibovitz is tired and nursing a cold, and she' s just flown back to New York on the red-eye from Los Angeles, where she spent two days shooting Angelina Jolie for Vogue. Like so many of her photo sessions, there was nothing simple about it. 'I talked with Angelina before the shoot,' says Leibovitz, who's famous for her preparation. 'She felt like she was coming back from having the baby and she felt very sexy and ready to go.' ... There were 50 people on the set, and racks of clothes from the New York spring collections to be tried and styled."

As an American, I am insulted that I am thought of as too squeemish to see this cover, while for the rest of the world, its fine:

.....................................TALKING POINTS.......................

12/04/06: THE GROUNDHOG DAY PROBLEM - FILE CLOSED?: I think we got it sorted. For those new, we've been a-struggling to place which February 2nd we can place Groundhog Day on - read below for more... Jim Hayden has done some timeline-sleuthing and the license plate of the red Cadillac driven by Phil after drinking at the bowling alley shows an expiration date of 12-92, which would indicate that events occur on February 2nd, 1992. The Jeopardy evidence listed in the below Talking Point of 27/03/06 supports this too, so I'm satisfied... Groundhog Day, you may come join the party...

05/04/06: FACT AND FICTION?: If it's not clear already, this list is a mix of everything in films - whether fact or fiction. Hitler rubs shoulders with Don Corleone; Elizabeth I exists a few hundred miles south of Connor MacLeod... Does this trouble you? Jon McKamey wrote to say it did - that the true events of Amistad in 1839 sit uncomfortably between Nosferatu in 1838 and the Ravenous cannibals of 1840. Fair point. I'm sure most of us are intelligent enough to know that a list like this will include events that did happen and events that didn't. So I might see if I can italicise the true events, so we can keep an eye on the real history throughline. This may cause problems: I'm not comfortable marking some of the events in Birth of a Nation as true - much of it is blatant racist propaganda, though it purports to be true. The Resurrection of Christ - I'd put that as truth but would you? I'll get swamped with emails if I put it down as fact, and I'll get swamped with emails if I put it down as fiction. We'll see - for now I'll leave it as is, but it's food for thought... One definite fiction (but just how fictitious it is seems to be causing a problem) is The Matrix - for now I've kept its events in, though you'll notice they now all sound a little hazy...

31/03/06: BACK TO THE NATIVITY: I don't think we can include it, but worthy of a mention is December 25th 0000, submitted by Matt, and from, of course... anyone know?... Back To The Future. It's one of the significant dates Doc has programmed into the Delorean. See, I'm finding it hard to date the birth of Christ cinematically. Those films that do feature it, aren't too keen to put a date on it (historians vary between 8BC and 6AD, so why should directors make a random stab-in-the-dark at it...?). So can we link it to December 25th 0000, thanks to Dr Emmett Brown off of Hill Valley? No. Two reasons. Reason 1: Human error - it's not a date the film shows us, or is referred to in any factual way - it's a date the Doc has programmed into the time machine. Therefore who's to say it's correct? Reason 2: (This is a biggie - ) The year doesn't exist. Never did. The calendar ticked over from December 31st 1BC to January 1st 1AD. Happy New Year, Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and all that. But no year zero. Dionysius, of 532AD (248th year of the Diocletian era, as he called it) set the year system as we know it according to this. So if Doc, or Einstein the dog, or whoever, travelled back in time to December 25th 0000, what would have happened? Would the Delorean have broken? Or ended up squished between two years? I like to think so. Either way, it's not a real year, and there's no evidence cinematically for it ever being out there in movieworld, so sorry, it doesn't make the timeline. Someone go watch The Greatest Story Ever Told, cos so far the nearest thing to the cinematic dating of Jesus' birth is 4AD - a predator feasts on things. Not good.

29/03/06: HARRY POTTER & THE CHRONOLOGY OF SECRETS: Various of you have corrected and re-corrected the Harry Potter dates, notably Harry's birthday, and subsequent events. I think the original submission sent in actually came from the books (ooh, cheating), which lists his date of birth as July 31 1980, thus setting the events in the early 90s. Many would say the films' events actually happen ten years later - does anyone have any evidence for this from the films themselves? If anyone who has the Harry Potter DVDs can verify any dates for me, please let me know. As it is, I'll leave the dates for the mo until someone can tell me either way a definite set of dates from the films. It might be we can know nothing from the films, and only the books are explicit about this. But it'd be nice to include the world of Hogwarts if poss. Then hopefully we can put Harry Potter to bed (it's past his bed-time anyway).

27/03/06: THE GROUNDHOG DAY PROBLEM REVISITED: We've had some suggestions re the Groundhog Day problem... So it's over to you. There are a few suggestions: One is that you can date the Jeopardy episode to an original broadcast of November 11th 1991 (thanks Myron Meyer for your sleuthing on this!) - so does that mean we can date the movie to February 2nd 1992? Another suggestion (from Evelyn C Leeper, using William Baring-Gould's method for dating Sherlock Holmes' adventures) is to check Pennsylvania's weather history for all the February 2nds, and find the snowstorm... but then if we acknowledge it's a work of fiction, it's going to be a fictitious snowstorm (and a fictitious Jeopardy episode then? I dunno...). Duane Lanham would place it just using 'the present day rule' (though it never says 'Present Day'), while Rachel suggests it's 1992, since that's when Bill Murray visited the Punxsutawney Groundhog Day festivities to study for his role. The film was released the next year, so can we presume from that that it's set in 1992? This is getting far too anal for such a trivial thing, but that's what the site's here for! So now, your comments please. Let me know using the link at the top what you think of this - is there enough evidence that it's set on February 2nd 1992? Or do you have evidence to the contrary? Maybe then this elusive film can finally take it's rightful place on the Movie Timeline...

25/03/06: THE MATRIX - ALTERNATE UNIVERSE vs DOWNRIGHT LIE: I'll be honest, I haven't seen it in a while, and I also don't have a copy - scandalous, I know. But various people submit various dates from it (eg. 1999 as the main events of the first film) - but then of course it's rightly pointed out (thanks to John T Folden and others) that the 1999 history is part of the lie that is the Matrix, created by the machines. We've had some such as David Abernathy wondering whether alternate universes/timelines should be allowed - I think they should, in cases like Donnie Darko or Back To The Future II or the Terminator films - these are events depicted in cinema, and for that brief period of time they do actually happen and take a place in history. Then, for whatever reason, normally thanks to time-travelling meddlers, that alternate history ceases to be. So that's fine - they're in. But The Matrix - well that never happened in 1999, it was just a downright lie. We've got some dates included, thanks to Andrew for trawling the DVDs. I think some are from the Animatrix - do we allow that? I think I will until someone complains...

11/03/06: SAME DATE, DIFFERENT MOVIE: I love it when a plan comes together... And yes it's finally happened that we've got two submissions for the same date, for different movies. Once this list fills out - cos large though it is, it's still only scraping the surface of the chronology movie-world has provided us - we might find more dates like this. But for now, cast your eyes to July 4th, 1978 - it's only a little thing, but it's nice to know that while David Scott Freeman fell from a tree and travelled through time, Forrest Gump was at that exact moment toasting America with his sweetheart Jenny...

22/02/06: RUINED ENDINGS: There are spoilers on this site. It's probably a little late to tell you that, all the way down here. But I'm sure you expected nothing less, for a site that lists events in films. Anyway, apologies if any film you ha
